Before and After Walk Through of our Timeless Classic Kitchen Remodel

Immerse yourself in this cottage-inspired kitchen where plentiful light pours in, highlighting a space filled with classically lined pieces. Crafted by Sawhill’s remodeling team for nearly retired homeowners who love to cook and spend time with friends and family underfoot, this impeccable Edina, MN kitchen remodel carries a casual elegance. The desire was to brighten, update and make the space function at its highest level. Mission accomplished! We’re delighted to share the finished project with you.

The original kitchen layout utilized the perimeter of the room. Dated cabinetry with a scroll detail over the sink and limited counter space tell the story. Linoleum flooring and a highly patterned wallpaper in the eating nook showed the kitchen’s age. Very little natural light and original lighting fixtures left the space dimly lit. It was time for an update!

Our homeowners gave us the task of breathing new life into their kitchen. They yearned for additional square footage in this full kitchen remodel yet didn’t want to take space from the adjacent rooms. Working in our favor, the home had ample living and entertainment space outside of the kitchen. Therefore, the new layout didn’t need to fulfill those roles. The goal was truly to update the kitchen and brighten the area while adding necessary space to enhance its functionality.
A 22” bump out cantilevered from the existing floor joist to expand the footprint. We were able to preserve the existing roof line as the added square footage stayed under the current eve. The additional space created room for a much-needed kitchen island with storage and quaint seating for two, and increased countertop space for meal prep. The back wall of floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry was also made possible within the revised layout.

Sawhill and Michal Crosby Interiors worked together to blend the art of space planning, kitchen design and interior work. Together, we paid homage to the rest of the well-curated home while incorporating English-inspired influences in the kitchen remodel as requested by the homeowners.

We used a soft green paint on the majority of the cabinetry and the hood to maintain the home’s casual classic style. The kitchen island, floating shelves, and glass door armoire, which showcases family heirlooms, are crafted in a deep-stained oak to offer contrast, and play to the elegance of the home.

The backsplash leans into traditional sensibilities with a classic tile taking up residence behind the stove and on the outside wall, with a detailed inset tile found above the range.

Storage expanded exponentially in the new cabinetry layout and includes corner pull outs, spice pull outs, pot and lid organizers, a docking drawer, and a multitude of larger storage drawers and roll out shelves. The built-ins on the back wall offer high style, while housing food staples and serving pieces.

Beyond the kitchen, the front foyer greets family and newcomers alike with a welcoming flair.

A guest bath off of the kitchen received a makeover during the remodeling process as it captured square footage from the former kitchen pantry. The design takes its inspiration from the kitchen with light cabinetry set against a powder blue accent wall. The elegant sensibilities showcased in the kitchen reside in this calming bathroom oasis as well.

Inspired by their new kitchen, our clients spend most of their time cooking in it, reading the paper, and eating together. They enjoy their newly named ‘truth chairs’ at the kitchen island where no one seems to leave once they sit down. From a designer’s perspective, it is a joy to see clients thrive in their finished space.
