What’s hot in kitchen design? Every year the National Kitchen & Bath Association polls designers, remodelers, architects, dealers and manufacturers to determine what features homeowners are clamoring for. The results of this year’s 2018 Design Trends Survey are based on feedback received from 822 U.S. and Canadian professionals, between Aug. 17 to Sept. 6, 2017. While some of the trends are expected (like Farmhouse style), some are a bit of a dark horse surprise. Check it out for yourself below.
What’s Your Style?
Farmhouse is unsurprisingly the leader, with 79% of professionals reporting it as “trendy” or “very trendy.” However, not far behind is transitional and contemporary styles, with 77% and 73% respectively, reflecting an overall trend for clean lines and fewer embellishments. Let’s Mix it Up
More homeowners want to mix things up in terms of cabinet color. 60% of respondents indicated using a mix of two or more colors. This is a recent trend you’ll see reflected in some of our work, like this project, as homeowners are embracing the use of contrast. However, traditionalists have nothing to worry about as grays and whites still dominate with 89% and 90% respectively.
Wood is King
Unsurprisingly, hardwood floors continue to be the preferred floor material at 78% indicating its demand. However, coming in at a close second is ceramic and porcelain tile at 68% with many respondents reporting a demand for wood-look ceramic and porcelain.
May the Quartz Be with You
Quartz is the clear front-runner in counter material, with 94% reporting it as “trendy”. For years, granite has dominated the countertop market, but at 65%, it seems to be fading from the spotlight, at least for now. Another growing countertop trend? The mixing of countertop materials. For example, choosing a kitchen island material that differs from the perimeter counter material. 35% of NKBA respondents expect to do more surface mixing in 2018. See the subtle and elegant contrast of surface mixing in this recent Sawhill kitchen design/build project, featuring two contrasting natural stone counter materials., quartzite for the island and range areas and granite for the perimeter.
Storage and More of It
With so many new, amazing storage features and a general inclination toward clean lines, it’s not surprising that storage features are included in more than 90% of kitchen projects. Charging drawers, trash and recycling pullouts, spice drawers, utensil inserts, and other storage features are all about making your kitchen (and you) work smarter, not harder.
