BEFORE-AND-AFTER KITCHEN TRANSFORMATION: ‘STAYING PUT!’
A homeowner’s decision to stay put was the motivation behind this tired kitchen’s transformation. Rather than moving, our client had decided to renovate her 1970’s town home in the city to better suit her needs and lifestyle. With the decision to stay put made, her first remodel priority was the small, tired kitchen space.
Dated and cramped, the kitchen did little to reflect her personal taste and the layout was awkward and cramped when entertaining, something she enjoyed immensely. This being a townhouse, space was also a critical factor. Our homeowner wished for additional storage and more ‘mingle’ space when entertaining. All said, it small area with big aspirations
Our client’s interest in cooking, entertaining, travel, food and wine played an important role in the development of our design. Our goals were to create a kitchen space that felt open, was conducive to entertaining and reflected our client’s personal aesthetics. A half bookcase that segregated the kitchen and dining room was removed and a large window added off the dining area to increase the space visually.
The addition of a buffet area also provided additional serving and storage space. Within the kitchen itself, we focused on creating an efficient work triangle. Perfect for entertaining, the main cooking zone surrounds the chef while allowing guests to mingle outside the prep area. A speed oven situated above an elevated dishwasher added efficiency while conserving space. With this design, nothing in the kitchen was more than a few steps away while still providing the ample countertop and storage space our serious cook desired.
Material and color choices were inspired by our client’s love for cherry wood and her collection of pottery. The backsplash and granite choices as well as the striking curved cooking area were chosen to reflect her artistic tastes and display areas were integrated throughout the design for display of her prized pottery. Even the counter stools, designed and custom made by a local artist, were carefully chosen to reflect the personality of our homeowner.
This project is proof that you don’t need to have a lots of space to have a visually inspired kitchen perfect for entertaining. Good things can come in small packages!
