BEFORE-AND-AFTER KITCHEN TRANSFORMATION: ‘FROM THE 1920’s TO THE PRESENT’
This kitchen was not so nice when we first saw it but this small home in the city had ‘good bones’ and a lot of potential. The homeowner had attempted to do cosmetic updates by refinishing the existing cabinetry but found that the outcome was not work the effort and that her wish list exceeded the possibilities available if she did not consider a new redesign of the entire kitchen, dinette and rear entry.
Advantages going into the project included the kitchen size which was larger than typical homes of this style in the neighborhood and it included an informal dining space. The client also brought a great deal to the design development stage. She had a lot of natural design talent and was a student at the time studying art and design. Challenges included a poor layout with lots of doorways and several traffic patterns.
The final design included several small layout changes that had a big impact. To improve traffic flow, we eliminated one of the doorways from the upstairs split stairway and removed/relocated the broom closet and clothes chute. This helped increase counter/work space between the refrigerator and range. Subtle improvements were made to the cabinet and appliance layout which resulted in better work stations and storage. The window in the dinette was enlarged and centered on the new arched opening to bring in more natural light and centered the space.
The important design elements included cabinet style and construction (inset with a face frame) which was duplicated to match the original cabinets. The hardwood floors matched the rest of the floors in the house and the color palette of white on white with natural green granite counter tops was a perfect canvas for the artistic touches of color and furnishings added by our client.
Te result was a period style kitchen with current features and a big change in how the kitchen functioned and looked. Our client loved her new kitchen so much that she insisted we include her in one of the project photos (top left photo below)!
